When I get sick, my laptop doesn’t leave my side. It’s one of my worst habits. I think there’s something much more constructive in convalescing in the Amish mode—no electronics, low lighting, nothing more than water, sunlight, and soup until the aches go away. That said, I don’t abide by that in the slightest. I become a fiend for my computer.

Ernie, Yellow Ranger
These two paintings are the best examples of the practice. I imagine some of the imagery comes to me from the mental space I go in when I’m sick. When I have a flu or a cold, I am inconsolable. I think darkly of my meager corner of creation and expect the worst of the world. I think I channel paranoia, confusion, and the visual langauge of the “flu dream” into these silly little drawings, which cracks me up, and helps me to see their function.
